Kriel: I’d love to represent USA at World Cup

Springbok centre Jesse Kriel’s twin brother, Dan, could make it a family affair at the 2027 World Cup in Australia.

Dan is a former Junior Springbok who played alongside the likes of Jesse, Handré Pollard, Malcolm Marx and Wilco Louw in 2014. He enjoyed spells with the Bulls, Stormers, Western Province and Lions before leaving for the US.

The 32-year-old midfielder, who plays for the Seattle Seawolves in Major League Rugby, will qualify for the USA Eagles in January through residency and has already caught the attention of coach Scott Lawrence.

“It was never the plan to play for America or something I thought about,” Kriel told Rapport.

“When we came over, I only signed a three-year contract and it never occurred to me that one day I would get the opportunity to possibly play Test rugby for America and maybe go to a World Cup.

“America has given so much to me and my family and I would love to represent this country in the 2027 World Cup,” Kriel added.

“It would be an incredible honour for me and my family to represent the red, white and blue on an international stage and inspire the younger American rugby generation.”

Seattle face the California Legion in the MLR semi-finals on Sunday.
