‘My boy almost didn’t recognise me’

Cheslin Kolbe says a heartbreaking moment with his son convinced him it was finally time to end his globe-trotting career and return home to the Stormers.

The Springbok star is back in Cape Town after nine years abroad, but while the opportunity to finish his career where it all began was a major attraction, family ultimately made the decision for him.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with IOL, Kolbe revealed that spending long periods away from his wife and children forced his hand.

“Yes, the reason was to come back to play for the Stormers, where my rugby started. Hopefully, I can finish my career with the team as well. But the biggest part was for my wife and kids.”

Kolbe said one particular moment last year hit especially hard.

“Not being here with them, seeing them grow, was tough on us. Last year, I returned after six months of not seeing my children – Kylah, Mila and Cayden – and my boy almost didn’t recognise me. That made me realise it is time to come home and spend time with them.”

The two-time World Cup winner is now keen to make a big contribution.

“I am really excited about pulling that Stormers jersey over my head and playing in front of the Cape supporters.

“I want to make a positive impact as a player and contribute wherever I can for the team.”
