Saffas Abroad: Burger, Ward impress in playoffs

Exeter Chiefs prop Ethan Burger and Stade Français centre Jeremy Ward got on the scoresheet in domestic league playoffs this past weekend.

Bulls-bound flank Hanro Liebenberg‘s early try was not enough as the Leicester Tigers fell 45-31 to the Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens. Bok lock prospect JJ van der Mescht came off the bench for Saints in the second half.

Former Tuks prop Ethan Burger scored a 68th-minute try as the Exeter Chiefs edged defending Premiership champions Bath 27-26 at The Rec. Burger and former Stormers hooker Joseph Dweba both came off the Chiefs bench early in the second half. Bok prop Thomas du Toit scored a 19th-minute try for coach Johann van Graan’s side, who utilised prop Franz van Wyk and scrumhalf Bernard van der Linde off the bench.

French Top 14
Former Sharks centre Jeremy Ward dotted down in the second half as Stade Français booked their place in the Top 14 semi-finals with a 45-5 thrashing of La Rochelle.

Scrumhalf James Hall started in Perpignan’s 47-24 win against Provence in the Top 14 relegation playoff.
