Friday Night Lights: The Bulls’ heartbeat

The Vodacom Bulls’ quest for a maiden URC title owes much to the leadership and consistency of Marcell Coetzee.

While much of the attention will fall on the Bulls’ star players ahead of Friday night’s URC final against Leinster at Croke Park, the impact of the team’s leaders will be key to success.

Behind the big moments and headline-grabbing plays stands a player who has become the embodiment of everything the Bulls value.

Coetzee’s influence on this team stretches far beyond what happens during 80 minutes.

The veteran loose forward has once again been a driving force in the Bulls’ campaign, helping steer the side through the demands of both the URC and Investec Champions Cup while leading alongside fellow senior figures such as Ruan Nortjé.

At 35, Coetzee continues to set the standard.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: The prop who rebuilt his career

Bulls coach Johan Ackermann has been full of praise for his captain’s contribution.

“I had always admired Marcell as a player. Now I have got the privilege to coach him,” said Ackermann.

“He is just a tremendous human being, first of all. And, secondly, he is in great form at the moment. He has worked hard on his conditioning, so he is in a good space and he is playing really well.”

Ackermann believes Coetzee’s value extends well beyond his performances on the field.

“It’s important for any team that your leaders do well and he is doing well at the moment. He is a leader on and off the field.

“The players have a tremendous respect for him as a person, not just for his capability on the rugby field, but also the way he speaks and the way he leads by example off the field.

“He is just a good team man.”

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Nienaber’s last dance with Leinster?

That reputation has been earned over years of putting the team first.

“That’s what I appreciate about Marcell,” Ackermann added. “When he plays for the team, it’s really personal for him. He gives his all for the team. That’s what he wants to do.”
