Lions backline coach Ricardo Loubscher believes Quan Horn will be ready to take over the goal-kicking duties for the Springboks if required.
The Lions fullback was a surprise selection at flyhalf for the Boks’ season opener against the Barbarians in Gqeberha on Saturday.
It will be Horn’s second appearance in the green and gold after making his Test debut off the bench against Portugal in Bloemfontein in 2024.
Wing Cheslin Kolbe has been confirmed as the Boks’ designated goal-kicker with Horn a back-up option.
RASSIE: Boks see something in Quan at 10
Loubscher told Netwerk24 that the 24-year-old is more than capable of stepping up if called upon.
“What few people know is that Quan works very hard on his kicking for posts,” said Loubscher, a former Springbok fullback.
[Ex-Springbok flyhalf and Lions kicking coach] Morné Steyn works with him on his kicking.
“He spent a lot of time on it, especially in the latter part of the season.”

Horn was named at No 10 by Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus in a bold selection aimed at testing the fullback’s versatility.
Loubscher says it shouldn’t have come as a surprise.
“When I saw the team list, I was immediately excited,” he said. “He has the right temperament, is a student of the game and puts a lot of work into analysing both opposition teams and his own game.”
