Jeff Wilson and James Parsons have questioned the omission of Hurricanes star Du’Plessis Kirifi from Dave Rennie’s first All Blacks squad.
The openside flank has arguably produced the best season of his career, which culminated in the Canes blowing away the Chiefs 60-5 in Saturday’s Super Rugby Pacific final.
Speaking on Sky Sport NZ’s The Breakdown, Parsons said the 28-year-old could not have done any more to earn selection.
“There’s no way he could have played any better, statistically or visually. It’s the best season he’s had and I think his leadership has been exceptional as well,” said the former Blues hooker, who earned two Test caps for the All Blacks.
SQUAD: Savea captains Rennie’s All Blacks
Parsons believes Ardie Savea’s appointment as captain counted against Kirifi.
“To me, it says Ardie will be at seven [openside flank] and there’s no intention of subbing him off. That’s 80 minutes,” he said.
“The versatility is all in that six and eight role, with a guy like Anton Segner who can also cover seven.”
The loose-forward group includes several players capable of covering multiple positions, including Peter Lakai, Luke Jacobson and newcomer Segner.
Rennie has already indicated that he views Segner as a genuine openside option.
RENNIE: Rieko a strong chance for SA tour
Wilson echoed Parsons’ view.
“That role off the bench has never really been a specialist position,” said the former All Blacks wing.
“You’ve always wanted someone who can cover. Luke Jacobson, for example, can play across the loose trio.”
Wilson admitted he was disappointed for Kirifi but believes the Hurricanes skipper remains firmly in the selectors’ plans.
“Everyone knows I’m a fan of the way Du’Plessis Kirifi leads and plays,” he said. “I’ve got no doubt he’ll be part of that trip to South Africa.”
KEO: Rennie’s first All Blacks squad – what it means for Springboks
Rennie confirmed he personally informed Kirifi of the decision.
An additional 10 players are set to be added for the All Blacks’ tour of South Africa in August and September, potentially leaving the door open for Kirifi.
