Ex-KES coach: Moyo always destined for greatness

Vusi Moyo’s meteoric rise to the Springbok squad has come as no surprise to his former high school coach.

The flyhalf starred for the Junior Boks when they won the Junior World Championship in Italy last year and was due to feature again at this year’s tournament in Georgia, which kicks off this weekend.

Instead, he was selected for the Boks against the Barbarians in Gqeberha last week and subsequently earned a call-up to the squad for the inaugural Nations Championship.

“Vusi has always been extremely talented,” former KES coach Marco Engelbrecht told Rugby365. “I’ve always believed he’s destined for greatness.

“There was a pivotal moment in Grade 11 when we sat down after Easter and had a real heart-to-heart conversation about where he wanted to go and how he was going to get there.

“I told him his talent alone wasn’t going to be enough. He bought into that, changed his attitude and conditioning, and started working much harder.

“He stayed behind after training to work on his kicking, and there was a massive shift in his motivation and work ethic. I was really proud of that.”

Engelbrecht believes Moyo has the tools to thrive at the highest level.

“He’s always had time on the ball. Even under pressure, he stays relaxed, which is the sign of a special player.

“He’s developed a huge kicking game, can take the ball to the line and brings others into the game. I see a lot of Handré Pollard in him.”
