Here are key details such as results and fixtures to know about the round of 32 knock out stage of the 2026 World Cup.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has entered its knockout phase, and history has already been made.
For the first time in the tournament’s 96-year existence, there is a Round of 32, a new addition born from the expanded 48-team format that gave two-thirds of the field a chance to reach the knockout rounds.
The top two teams from each of the twelve groups, along with the best eight third-placed teams, advanced to compete in a single-elimination tournament. Matches are played to a finish, with 30 minutes of extra time and a penalty shootout if scores remain level after 90 minutes.
Defending champions Argentina, co-hosts the United States, Mexico and Canada, five-time champions Brazil, France, Norway, Germany, England, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Colombia, Morocco, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, Ivory Coast, Belgium, Egypt, South Africa, Croatia, Cape Verde and Austria all qualified as either group winners or runners-up.
DR Congo, Sweden, Ghana, Ecuador, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Algeria, Paraguay and Senegal secured their places as the eight best third-placed sides.
The round opened on June 28 with Canada beating South Africa 1-0 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles — the very first knockout match at this stage in World Cup history.
Fifteen fixtures remain, running through to July 3, with the Round of 16 to follow immediately from July 4.
