Cash hints at more Lions arrivals

Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen has teased more signings to come as he starts preparing his squad for an even more demanding season. MORNÉ ESBEN reports.

The Joburg-based outfit will not only be taking part in the Vodacom URC, but by virtue of their top-eight finish, they’ll now also play Investec Champions Cup rugby.

To manage that, Van Rooyen needs to bolster his squad.

The Lions have already secured Springbok prop Boan Venter and lock Hyron Andrews, while also tying down several key players to new deals. But he says supporters can expect more arrivals.

“We’ll probably announce a few more names soon,” van Rooyen told SARugbymag.co.za.

“There are a few positions we felt we needed to strengthen a little bit. Probably among the outside backs and tight five and, along with Boan, a few more names.

“Certainly enough to get excited about.”

Van Rooyen – who was named the 2025-26 URC Coach of the Season – also believes the Lions’ next wave of homegrown talent is ready to make an impact.

He’s singled out a few players who have impressed in recent months, while suggesting more youngsters are close to breaking through.

“From our system, I think people are getting excited about someone like Siba Mahashe, along with Batho Hlekani and Haashim Pead, who over the last six months really came through well,” he said.

“I think we’ll have another three to five guys who over the next six to eight months can also raise their hands from within the system, and we’re obviously also very excited about that.”
