World Cup 2026: Coaches Who Have Been Sacked During the Tournament

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has not only delivered thrilling matches and dramatic upsets but has also claimed several managerial casualties.

As national teams fell short of expectations, a number of head coaches either resigned or were relieved of their duties following disappointing campaigns.

Here is a look at the managers who have left their positions during the tournament so far.

Julian Nagelsmann – Germany

One of the biggest shocks came when Julian Nagelsmann stepped down as Germany head coach after the four-time world champions were eliminated by Paraguay in the Round of 32 via a penalty shootout. Germany entered the tournament as one of the favourites, but their early exit ultimately led to Nagelsmann’s departure.

Ronald Koeman – Netherlands

Ronald Koeman also decided to leave his role after the Netherlands suffered a surprise Round of 32 defeat to Morocco. The Dutch were widely expected to progress much further, making their elimination one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.

Steve Clarke – Scotland

Steve Clarke brought an end to his seven-year spell in charge of Scotland after the team’s group-stage exit. Despite guiding Scotland to consecutive major tournaments, Clarke opted to step aside following another disappointing World Cup campaign.

Sabri Lamouchi – Tunisia

Sabri Lamouchi became the first managerial casualty of the 2026 World Cup. Tunisia dismissed the coach after a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening group-stage match, with the federation acting quickly in an attempt to salvage their campaign.

Sebastián Beccacece – Ecuador

Ecuador’s Round of 32 defeat to Mexico marked the end of Sebastián Beccacece’s tenure. The Argentine coach left his position shortly after the elimination, bringing his spell with the national team to a close.

Hong Myung-bo – South Korea

Following South Korea’s disappointing group-stage exit, Hong Myung-bo resigned amid mounting criticism over the team’s performances. His departure ended another chapter in his long association with South Korean football.

Miroslav Koubek – Czechia

Miroslav Koubek also stepped down after Czechia finished bottom of their World Cup group. The disappointing campaign prompted the veteran coach to leave his post.
