With Afro Nation Portugal set to kick off today, Friday, July 3, 2026, here are the top performances fans can look out for on day 1.
Afro Nation Portugal 2026 gets underway today (Friday, July 3), with African artists taking centre stage on the festival’s opening day as thousands of fans descend on Praia da Rocha for the annual celebration of Afrobeats and African music.
This year’s Day One lineup is headlined by Nigerian Grammy winner Burna Boy, South African pop sensation Tyla, Kenyan singer Bien, British-Nigerian artist Darkoo, and a host of South Africa’s biggest Amapiano acts, reflecting the growing influence of African music on the global festival circuit.
Burna Boy returns to Afro Nation as one of the event’s biggest attractions. The Nigerian superstar has become one of the festival’s defining performers over the years, with his previous appearances drawing some of the largest crowds. His set is expected to feature songs from his extensive catalogue, which has helped cement Afrobeats’ place on the international stage.
Also commanding significant attention is Tyla, whose rapid rise over the past two years has made her one of Africa’s most recognisable global stars. The South African singer arrives at Afro Nation after achieving international commercial success with her blend of Amapiano, Afropop and R&B, making her one of the festival’s most anticipated performers.
East Africa will also be represented by Kenyan singer Bien, who continues to build a successful solo career following his time with Sauti Sol. His appearance underscores the increasing presence of East African artists at major international festivals traditionally dominated by West African acts.
British-Nigerian musician Darkoo is another African act expected to attract large crowds.
While the LIT Stage will showcase Afrobeats and contemporary African pop, the Piano People Stage is expected to highlight South Africa’s thriving Amapiano movement.
Leading that lineup is internationally acclaimed DJ Uncle Waffles, whose rise has mirrored the genre’s global expansion. She will be joined by fellow South African artists Zee Nxumalo, Felo Le Tee, Nkosazana Daughter, Royal Musiq, Success SA, as well as JazzWorld, Thukuthela and GL_Ceejay, offering festival-goers an almost uninterrupted programme of Amapiano performances throughout the day.
With Burna Boy leading the bill and a diverse lineup spanning Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and the African diaspora, Day One of Afro Nation Portugal 2026 is expected to set the tone for a weekend celebrating the global reach and evolution of African music.
