England suffer late setback

An England back has been ruled out of Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against the Springboks at Ellis Park.

Fullback George Furbank was taken to hospital with appendicitis after suffering painful symptoms following Friday’s captain’s run.

England have yet to confirm his replacement, but Marcus Smith is likely to wear the No 15 jersey.

It is a big blow for Furbank, who has not featured for England since November 2024. A broken arm and recurring calf and knee injuries sidelined him in 2025, and a concussion saw him miss the start of this year’s Six Nations, in which he did not feature.

On Thursday, Furbank spoke about his tough road back to the England team.

“Just playing felt a long way off at times. Now I have got the opportunity I guess it is about taking it, and I just want to go out and enjoy being back in an England shirt,” he said.
