Brazilian football icon Neymar has officially announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 34-year-old made the emotional announcement after Brazil suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16. Neymar came off the bench and scored a stoppage-time penalty, but it was only a consolation as Brazil’s World Cup dream came to an end.
Neymar confirmed his retirement in an emotional way after the defeat against Norway.
He said,
“I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium and I finished here. It is now over.”
The announcement marks the end of a remarkable international career that spanned 16 years. Neymar retires as Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, scoring 80 goals and providing 59 assists in 130 appearances for the five-time world champions.
Despite lifting the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and winning Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the FIFA World Cup title remained elusive. Neymar featured in four World Cups, with injuries and heartbreaking eliminations preventing him from leading Brazil to a sixth world crown.
His retirement comes after Brazil’s disappointing last-16 exit under head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has pledged to begin a new era for the Seleção following the tournament.
