Double blow for Wallabies

A key back and influential forward have both been ruled out for Australia ahead of Saturday’s Nations Championship Test against France in Brisbane.

Wallabies flyhalf Carter Gordon will miss the next two internationals after suffering a calf injury, while flanker Tom Hooper has been sidelined for the Les Bleus clash with a shoulder injury.

Gordon was substituted with cramp during the Aussies’ 33-31 defeat to Ireland and was due to prove his fitness at training on Tuesday. However, he was unable to take the field and has also been ruled out of next week’s Test against Italy in Perth.

Hooper, who impressed off the bench against Ireland after replacing Rob Valetini, will also be unavailable.

Ben Donaldson took over at 10 after Gordon limped off, while Brumbies playmaker Declan Meredith is in camp and in line to make his debut at Suncorp Stadium.

Teammate Fraser McReight backed those waiting in the wings.

“He played really well,” McReight said of Gordon. “Devastated for him, but I guess injuries are a part of rugby and we’ve always said, ‘next man up’.

“We’ve got Donno and Dec, both had great seasons pushing their case.”
