DJ Speedsta Explains Why He Stayed Silent On Illegal Immigration Protests. As debate around the June 30 anti-immigration marches continues to dominate social media, DJ Speedsta has shared his perspective on the growing pressure placed on celebrities to comment on political and social issues publicly.
The South African DJ and media personality believes public figures should not feel obligated to weigh in on every trending topic, especially if they are not well-informed. Speaking about the backlash that followed the marches, Speedsta recalled hearing a discussion in Zulu where some people suggested boycotting celebrities who remained silent. He also mentioned that a friend had experienced criticism over an upcoming event for the same reason.
According to Speedsta, celebrities are people first and should have the freedom to decide when and how they express their opinions.
“First of all, celebrities are also human beings, and everybody’s allowed to have an opinion and preference,” he said. “I personally don’t speak much on politics because I don’t know much. So I’m the same. I’m not gonna go out there and say viva, viva this, viva… I’m not gonna speak on something I don’t know, you know.”
The June 30 demonstrations, organised by groups including March and March, called for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa and sparked protests in cities such as Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Cape Town. The demonstrations reignited national conversations around immigration, border security, employment and service delivery, while also placing public figures under pressure to declare where they stand.
Rather than joining the conversation for the sake of public approval, Speedsta argued that there is value in acknowledging when someone lacks enough understanding to contribute meaningfully. His comments suggest that speaking without sufficient knowledge can be more damaging than choosing to remain silent.
At a time when social media often interprets silence as taking sides, Speedsta’s stance offers a different perspective. He believes authenticity and honesty should take precedence over making statements to satisfy public expectations.
As South Africans continue to debate the issues raised by the June 30 marches, Speedsta’s remarks serve as a reminder that not every celebrity is obligated to become a political commentator. Sometimes admitting, “I don’t know enough to speak on it,” is the most responsible position to take.
