ZuluMecca’s ‘CAP’ Challenge Highlights Persistent Gender Gap In SA Hip-Hop. Award-winning actress and SAHHA-nominated hip-hop artist ZuluMecca is using her latest rap challenge to spark a conversation that reaches far beyond music. While her CAP Open Verse Challenge has attracted an impressive wave of entries, one statistic has stood out for all the wrong reasons.

After launching the challenge alongside the colourful video for “CAP,” ZuluMecca invited aspiring and established rappers alike to jump on the beat, download it, duet it, and deliver their own closing verse. She even teased a special reward for the best submissions, encouraging everyone to approach the challenge with creativity and fun.

But when she reflected on the entries received so far, a familiar pattern emerged.

“Interesting to see, I’ve had SO many submissions from male rappers. Even some who’ve never rapped but wanted to have fun on the beat. Only ONE submission from someone female. Yoh nisabani vele?” she wrote, expressing surprise that despite the challenge being open to everyone, women had barely participated.

Her post quickly resonated with fans, with some women admitting they were still working up the confidence to enter.

For ZuluMecca, the numbers reflect a much bigger issue within South African hip-hop. Although the genre continues to grow through freestyle challenges, cyphers, and social media collaborations, women remain significantly underrepresented in spaces that are designed to encourage participation and showcase talent.

The response is especially significant coming from an artist who has consistently championed female representation in hip-hop. Through her music, ZuluMecca has built a reputation for deeply personal storytelling that blends spirituality, identity, and fearless lyricism, while successfully balancing careers in both music and acting.

Rather than criticising the lack of female entries, her observation serves as a challenge to the culture itself. If a light-hearted, low-pressure competition still sees women largely watching from the sidelines, it raises important questions about confidence, visibility, and the barriers that continue to exist within the genre.

The CAP challenge was always intended to be fun. In her original announcement, ZuluMecca reminded participants not to overthink it, joking that “it’s cap after all” and encouraging rappers to simply enjoy the experience. The challenge has already gained momentum online, with support from hip-hop platforms helping spread the invitation even further.

As more entries continue to arrive, attention now turns to whether more women will answer the call. The platform is open, the beat is available, and the invitation remains the same.

ZuluMecca has started the conversation. Now the mic is waiting for whoever is ready to step into the cypher.
