The Golden Lions claimed Jukskei derby honours against the Blue Bulls on day two of the U18 Craven Week at Grey High in Gqeberha.
Border, Griquas and the Western Province XV also recorded victories on Tuesday. A total of 42 tries were scored across the four matches, with 10 coming in the derby.
The Bulls made the brighter start, using their lineout to build a 12-0 lead. The Lions hit back before half-time, with flyhalf Jaydon Viljoen landing a long-range penalty to cut the deficit to five points.
U18 CRAVEN WEEK DAY 1: Free State, WP start strong
The lead changed hands several times after the break before centre Ethan Lourens crossed for his second try late in the match. Lock Glodi Tshipamba added another to seal the Lions’ 43-32 victory.
Earlier, Border scored six tries in a 36-14 win over the Valke, with wing Ncuthu Kepe grabbing two.
Griquas and the Pumas combined for 12 tries in an entertaining contest. Fullback Tyler Campher scored a hat-trick as the Kimberley-based side pulled away after half-time, adding 22 points in the second half to clinch a 43-29 win.
The Western Province XV also recovered from a half-time deficit to beat the Griffons 52-33. Flyhalf Travis Pheiffer contributed 13 points, while wing Cayden Samuels and flanker Yanos Molnar scored two tries each.
