Edwill van der Merwe says the Springboks’ selfless culture has ensured every player is ready when called upon.
The Bok speedster gets another chance to start in Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld.
Van der Merwe will form part of a new-look back three alongside Aphelele Fassi and Canan Moodie.
He said the environment created by the Springbok coaches keeps every squad member focused on the team’s success, regardless of whether they are selected.
“The coaching staff have created a culture where you know exactly what the plans are and where you fit into them,” he said.
“Everyone knows the team always comes first. If you’re not playing, there’s no real time to feel sorry for yourself because you focus on what you can do to help the team.
“You then wait until you get your opportunity, and when it comes, you have to grab it with both hands.”

Competition for places in the Springbok back three remains fierce, with Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Moodie all vying for starting roles.
Van der Merwe said he feels privileged to have another opportunity to wear the green and gold, especially with Saturday’s match marking his first Test appearance at Loftus.
“There are so many talented wings in our group and in South Africa as a whole. I’m very privileged to be in the position where I can play this weekend.
“I’m really looking forward to it because it will be my first Test for the Springboks at Loftus.”
