‘The Postman’ to deliver for Lions

The Lions continue to strengthen their squad ahead of a massive season.

According to Netwerk24, the Joburg-based side has completed the signing of wing Daniel Kasende, after a stint with Welsh side the Ospreys.

The 31-year-old returns to where his professional career started.

Kasende’s arrival follows the reported signing of versatile back Boeta Chamberlain from English club the Newcastle Red Bulls, further boosting the Lions’ depth ahead of the Currie Cup, Investec Champions Cup and Vodacom URC campaigns.

The move marks something of a homecoming for Kasende, who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo before growing up in Joburg.

A former Queens High School pupil, Kasende represented Wits in the Varsity Cup before launching his professional career with Griquas and the Cheetahs.

He later joined the Ospreys, having featured on the right wing for the Cheetahs in their victorious 2023 Currie Cup final against the Pumas in Bloemfontein.

Nicknamed “The Postman” during his university days in Joburg, Kasende brings experience from both South African and European rugby to a Lions squad looking to go one step further after finishing runners-up in the last two Currie Cup finals.

The Lions begin their 2026 Currie Cup campaign against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein next Sunday.
