Arsenal Football Club have officially completed the signing of French goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Leeds United.
The 26-year-old arrives at the Emirates Stadium after spending seven seasons at Leeds, where he made 215 appearances and played a key role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League. During his time at Leeds, Meslier kept 70 clean sheets during his time at Elland Road, establishing himself as one of the most experienced young goalkeepers in English football before falling out of favour last season.
The decision to sign Meslier is to strengthen their goalkeeping department. He is expected to provide depth behind first-choice goalkeeper David Raya, while his arrival could allow highly-rated youngster Tommy Setford to gain valuable first-team experience on loan.
Meslier began his professional career with French club Lorient before joining Leeds on loan in 2019. His move was later made permanent after impressing during the club’s Championship-winning campaign. He went on to become Leeds’ first-choice goalkeeper for several seasons, gaining significant Premier League experience.
Meslier fell down the pecking order for Leeds during the 2025/26 but there are reports from Arsenal that they believe the Frenchman has the quality and experience to strengthen their squad ahead of another demanding season competing in multiple competitions.
Meslier becomes one of Arsenal’s latest additions this summer as the Premier League champions continue to reinforce their squad in pursuit of more domestic and European success.
