Lions coach already in finals mode

Head coach Mziwakhe Nkosi is hungry for Currie Cup final redemption this season after back-to-back heartbreaks for the Lions at Ellis Park.

Griquas stunned the Pride 27-25 in last year’s showpiece in Johannesburg, a year after the Sharks had edged them 16-14 in extra-time to claim the title.

The Lions kick off their 2026 campaign next Sunday in Bloemfontein against the Cheetahs, and Nkosi already has his eyes firmly fixed on a spot in the 12 September decider of rugby’s oldest competition.

“We are preparing to play in the final on September 12. That has to be our mindset,” Nkosi was quoted by Netwerk24.

“We need to find a way to get to the final again and hopefully it’s a case of us succeeding at the third attempt.”

Ivan van Rooyen’s Lions reached the Vodacom URC quarter-finals for the first time last season, and will compete in the Investec Champions Cup for the first time next term.

Nkosi sees the Currie Cup trophy, which the Lions last lifted in 2015, as central to sustaining that progress.

“By nature, we have a few goals that we want to achieve in the Currie Cup,” he said. “Ultimately, we really want to be extremely competitive. Our goal is to win the tournament.”
