Richie Mo’unga says he aims to be ready for an All Blacks call-up ahead of his long-awaited return to action this weekend.
The 56-Test flyhalf is set to come off the bench for Canterbury against Auckland on Saturday in the opening round of the NPC, nearly three years after leaving New Zealand rugby for Japan.
Mo’unga is currently ineligible for the All Blacks under NZ Rugby’s selection policy, but could yet come into contention if injuries strike during the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour of South Africa.
“There’s a lot to it, and to be honest, my mind has thought of every possible scenario around what could happen over the next couple months,” he admitted.
“And it sort of boils down to one thing – I can’t control any of that. So the best thing I can do is just be ready and play some good rugby.”

For now, though, Mo’unga’s focus is solely on getting back onto the field.
“At the end of the day, it’s just footy, and I just love playing rugby, whether it’s here in Christchurch or in Japan,” he said.
“I’m a competitor. I’m someone that always wants to be better and striving to be a great, and that’s at all levels. This week it’s NPC.”
Mo’unga had been expected to feature for Christchurch club Linwood before a calf injury delayed his comeback.
