The Vodacom Bulls have secured access to one of the Currie Cup’s most exciting finishers after striking a unique agreement with the Boland Cavaliers.
Boland coach Hawies Fourie confirmed to Netwerk24 that prolific winger Xavier Mitchell has signed a new deal until the end of 2028, with the agreement allowing the 28-year-old to represent the Bulls during parts of the URC season while remaining available for the Cavaliers in the SA Cup and Currie Cup.
The arrangement means Mitchell will join the Bulls after Boland’s Currie Cup campaign, before returning to Wellington once his URC commitments are complete.

“You want to create opportunities for players,” Fourie explained. “I felt we needed to find a balance where we could keep our best players while also strengthening Boland. You stagnate if you keep losing your best players.
“We spoke to the Bulls and found a way to make it work. It’s a joint agreement where he’ll be available for the Bulls’ URC matches at the end of this year and early next year. After that he’ll be available for the Cavaliers again.”

Fourie said the model mirrors the existing cooperation agreement between the Stormers and Griquas.
“It’s a way for unions that aren’t franchises to hold onto their best players for a little longer. I also believe it’s good for Xavier’s development.”
