UEFA, CONCACAF and AFC Call for Gianni Infantino to Resign as FIFA President

UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to step down and leave his position with dignity.

In a joint open letter to the football family, the three confederations urged Infantino not to seek re-election when FIFA members vote for the next president in March 2027, putting significant pressure on the FIFA chief ahead of the election. They criticised FIFA for advancing a proposal on a compressed timeline without meaningful consultation with its 211 Member Associations, arguing that the process limited proper scrutiny and represented a serious failure of judgment.

They statement read,

“The confederations argue that the issue goes beyond a communication error. They say FIFA’s decision to push the proposal on a compressed timeline, without meaningful consultation with its 211 Member Associations, reflects a serious failure of judgment and a process designed to limit scrutiny. They also describe the attempt to sell an interest in the FIFA World Cup as a fundamental breach of trust. According to the letter, FIFA’s response has failed to recognise the seriousness of the decision, while the review of the matter should be handled by a fully independent third party rather than FIFA itself or anyone directly connected to the organisation.”

They also described the reported attempt to sell an interest in the FIFA World Cup as a “fundamental breach of trust” with the very institutions FIFA exists to serve. The confederations called for any review of the matter to be conducted by a fully independent third party, insisting that FIFA itself should play no role in the investigation.

The three confederations’ stance comes amid growing tensions over Infantino’s leadership and recent decisions at FIFA, with the football governing body now facing renewed calls for greater transparency, accountability and independent oversight.
