Ndhlovu accelerating his 15s transition

Former Blitzbok speedster Mfundo Ndhlovu is relishing the opportunity to build something special with the Stormers XXIII.

He scored on his Currie Cup debut against defending champions Griquas in round one of the competition and has started the Stormers’ last four matches, with the winger set to feature again in Saturday’s clash with the Pumas in Nelspruit.

“It’s a big opportunity, which I’m grateful for. I’ve always wanted to play in the Currie Cup,” Ndhlovu said. “I’ve watched some of the guys playing in it and wanted to be part of it.”

He highlighted his growing connection with fullback Dylan Miller, noting their on-field synergy.

“Whoever plays, we’re always in sync and connected. Dylan is very talented and makes my job so much easier,” Ndhlovu noted. “I try to do the same for him, and we support each other and communicate.”

The 29-year-old made a couple of good carries against the Cheetahs last week and feels positive about his performances so far.

STORMERS COACH: We don’t have time to sulk

“Having the backing of the coaches helps me to go out there and express myself,” he said. “I’ll just keep enjoying myself, keep gelling with the team and help wherever I can.”

Ndhlovu, who was part of the South African team that won the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal, is now focused on his future in the 15-a-side game.

“I’m now at the Stormers, and I’m relishing the opportunity,” he noted. “I’m hoping for more opportunities to play, build something special and then let the pieces fall where they may.”

On adjusting to regular 15-a-side rugby and the Stormers’ brand of attack and contestable kicking game, Ndhlovu added: “I feel like sevens has helped me with the transition.

“I’ve moved into a team environment where those skill sets are used and utilised in different ways.

“Adapting has been easy because we have coaches who help us. They’re always in my ear, giving me advice, and that has really accelerated my transition into 15s.”
