NZ Rugby has retained one of its stars through until 2029, making him eligible for the next British & Irish Lions tour.
Loosehead prop Ethan de Groot has committed his future to the All Blacks, Highlanders and Southland for the next three seasons despite massive interest from overseas clubs.
The announcement came just hours after the 43-Test juggernaut played 54 minutes in the All Blacks’ 54-0 victory over the Sharks in Durban on Tuesday night.

De Groot said the arrival of his first child, Nova, was a major factor in his decision to remain in New Zealand.
“Re-signing was an easy decision for me,” he said. “I love the Highlanders and playing for my province, and I take real pride in representing my country in the All Blacks. I’ve always been proud of where I come from, so staying down south and continuing to represent this region for another two years was an easy choice.”
De Groot has established himself as the All Blacks’ premier loosehead prop after enjoying a career-best Super Rugby season.

The 76-cap Highlanders prop also took on co-captaincy duties this year and has started the Dave Rennie era in strong form.
With the World Cup and Lions tour both on his radar, De Groot knows there is plenty to play for over the next few seasons.
“Three wins has been a great way to start the year, but the hard work has just begun. It’s a huge season with the Nations Championship and the South Africa tour,” he said.
“With the World Cup in sight next year and the Lions tour even further forward, it is a goal of mine to keep my form, to be a part of both of these career highlights.”
