Former Sharks coach John Plumtree has identified an area where the Springboks could exploit an All Blacks side that has impressed him on attack.
Speaking on the PlayZN TMO podcast, Plumtree praised New Zealand’s ability to create opportunities during their three tour matches against the Stormers, Sharks and Vodacom Bulls.
“I love the All Blacks’ skill level, love watching their speed – they’re trying to play the game,” he said.
“Some of the skill-set stuff, the ability to create space with the ball or kick to space have been really prevalent in these games. It’s been some really great footy to watch.”

Plumtree believes the All Blacks have also made improvements in key areas ahead of the first Test against the Springboks at Ellis Park.
He highlighted their scrum, which he felt improved during their victory over the Bulls, as well as their discipline.
“They would’ve highlighted some areas in their game where they need to get better at to play against the Springboks,” he said.
“The scrum improved with Xavier Numia, Codie Taylor and Tyrel Lomax against the Bulls, discipline I thought was better. They conceded less than 10 penalties and we know referee Matthew Carley will go tough around the discipline stuff.”

But it is the All Blacks’ defensive approach close to their own tryline that has Plumtree concerned.
“The only thing that really bothers me a little bit about the All Blacks right now is their defence 5m from the try line,” he said.
“They’re not contesting and the reason why it’s a concern is you allow the Springboks to attack from anywhere in the lineout – whether it’s at the back, the front or the middle.
“They will build a pretty big maul and they’ll have options off it.”
