The influential group will bring their celebrated sound to Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on 10 October, joining Ohio artist and longtime collaborator Vice Souletric for what promises to be one of the festival’s standout international showcases.

Slum Village have been woven into hip-hop’s history for more than two decades. Emerging from Detroit’s Conant Gardens, the group originally featured T3, Baatin and the late J Dilla, creating a distinctive blend of soulful samples, inventive production and sharp lyricism that became synonymous with the city’s underground sound.

Their 2000 classic Fantastic, Vol. 2 remains one of the defining albums of its era, earning lasting respect for its warm production, creative approach and effortless chemistry. Today, T3 and producer Young RJ continue carrying the Slum Village legacy forward, keeping the group’s sound and cultural impact alive for a new generation.

For Back To The City, the booking arrives at a particularly significant moment. The festival is celebrating 20 years since its inception, while Johannesburg marks 140 years and South Africa commemorates 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising.

Under the theme “Against All Odds,” this year’s festival aims to connect the spirit of resistance that shaped the city’s history with the creativity and determination that have driven South African hip-hop for generations.

The massive one-day celebration will bring together around 100 artists, 30 DJs and 40 graffiti artists, alongside MC and DJ battles, skateboarding, basketball, gaming, food, fashion and other elements of hip-hop culture.

Tickets are already available through Webtickets and Pick n Pay outlets.

With Slum Village’s Detroit legacy meeting Johannesburg’s deep-rooted hip-hop culture, the 2026 edition of Back To The City is shaping up to be more than a festival. It is a meeting point between two cities with powerful stories of resilience, creativity and reinvention.

Come October, Newtown will have another reason to turn the volume all the way up.
