‘Currie Cup final will be in Kimberley’

Centre Zane Bester says Griquas are determined to go back-to-back in the Currie Cup and lift the trophy in front of their fans.

The defending champions secured a home semi-final with an impressive 38-14 victory against the Pumas in Nelspruit last week, and are targeting a final-round win against the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington on Sunday to secure top spot on the log and a home final should they progress.

“We had two goals at the beginning of this tournament,” Bester told OFM Sport.

“We want to end top of the log. Boland might be desperate [to reach the semi-finals], but we’re also very desperate to stay at the top of the log and be able to play a home semi-final and a home final.

“So that’s definitely our No 1 goal.”

Griquas have adopted a knockout-stage mindset for the business end of the competition.

“Our second goal is these last four games,” Bester said. “These last four games, including the Pumas game, we wanted to treat them as four finals.”

“There are three finals left. That’s how we’ll treat this game against Boland.

“We’re not going to take our foot off the pedal now. We want to put our hands up and win the Currie Cup.

“From the start of the season, we’ve been saying we’re not here to defend our title, but actually to win it back-to-back.

“That’s what we want for the people of Kimberley: to give them two more games in this Currie Cup and make it back-to-back in our hometown, in front of our home fans.

“Last year it was at Ellis Park. This year it’s going to be in Kimberley, and we’re very, very, very excited.”
