King Kolbe: Boks stuck to the plan

Cheslin Kolbe lauded his Springbok teammates for turning last week’s disappointment into victory at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

The Boks levelled the four-Test Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series 1-1 after a hard-fought 33-26 win over the All Blacks.

Kolbe was a late inclusion in the match 23 after recovering in time from a knock at Ellis Park, and put in a Man of the Match performance – slotting 18 points from the kicking tee in another perfect goal-kicking display.

“To Cape Town, to South Africa – thank you so much,” Kolbe said.

“Last week we slipped one and we could just feel the mood this week from the South African fans. Whenever we put on this jersey, we just want to do them proud, the jersey proud, our families proud, so thank you for being behind us and thank you for sticking with us. We’ll just keep going from here and continue to learn.”

Kolbe also reflected on the lessons from the first Test, where the Boks struggled to turn pressure and opportunities into points.

“That’s Test match rugby. You need to take every point that’s given to you and I think last week we didn’t capitalise on that,” he said.

“But to turn it around tonight, just credit to the boys for sticking to the plan and just taking the points on offer. It’s never easy against the All Blacks and that’s why it’s called the Greatest Rivalry for occasions like this.
