Cassper Recalls Being A Laughing Stock After The Release Of ‘Ngud’ & ‘Tito Mboweni’ South African hip-hop heavyweight Cassper Nyovest has taken a trip down memory lane, reflecting on the early backlash he faced for two tracks that later became undisputed classics.
Responding to a fan who asked if people really “trash talked” Ngud’ and Tito Mboweni, the Family Tree boss didn’t hold back.
“Like nobody’s business. Not only fans but artists too. I was a laughing stock when those dropped, and they said I should have never ever dropped them,” Cassper wrote. He even recalled a specific tweet that read: “Is this nigga serious?” before adding with a laugh, “Mara today?? Classic!!! I KNOW WHAT IM DOING!!! I AM THE GOAT!!!”
Ngud’ (Kwesta featuring Cassper Nyovest, 2016) and Tito Mboweni (from Cassper’s 2017 album Thuto) both arrived to mixed reactions at the time. Critics and some peers questioned the direction. Yet both songs went on to dominate charts, radio, and parties, with Tito Mboweni becoming a cultural anthem that even drew a light-hearted royalty request from the late former Reserve Bank governor himself.
Fans quickly piled on in support of Cassper’s reflection, with one noting that the same year Tito Mboweni dropped, Cassper followed it up with Thuto, widely regarded as one of the top South African hip-hop albums of all time. Others simply declared him the GOAT, pointing to his consistent ability to prove doubters wrong.
Nearly a decade later, the songs that once made him a punchline are the ones fans still scream word-for-word. Cassper’s message was clear: the vision was always there. The rest of the industry just needed time to catch up.
