Herc Cut The Lights Reveals How “Kwenzekile” With Blxckie Came Together In Just 20 Minutes. Herc Cut The Lights has opened up about the studio session that gave him one of the biggest turning points of his career, revealing that Blxckie’s “Kwenzekile” was created in roughly 20 minutes.

Speaking on the Real Stuff Podcast with Maggz and Da LES, the South African producer was asked if there was a particular song that made him realise he had found his place in music. For Herc, there was no hesitation. “‘Kwenzekile’ was a record that really shifted everything for me a lot,” he recalled.
The track came together during what initially looked like an ordinary studio session. Herc and Blxckie made three songs that day, with “Kwenzekile” being the final one and arguably the most spontaneous.
Blxckie had a show to attend, while Herc was already in the studio working on another track. They had started by making two trap records before deciding to take the session in a different direction
“We were like, ‘Ah, bro, let’s just trap the vibe,’” Herc explained.
Herc then suggested a simpler approach to the production. “I said, ‘Just put four on the floor, slow it down.’” From there, the record began taking shape quickly. He built the beat, added the drums and had the chords ready within minutes.
Blxckie was already reacting to the music as Herc worked. “As I was adding things to the beat, he was humming along, and within 20 minutes, ‘Kwenzekile’ was done. The record just became what it became.”
That effortless chemistry would eventually produce one of the standout South African songs of 2021. Featuring Madumane and Chang Cello, “Kwenzekile” became an important record in Blxckie’s rise while also giving Herc a major boost as a producer.
The song arrived at a crucial point in Herc’s career. His journey had moved from creating music on SoundCloud to working with some of the biggest names in the African music scene, with his growing reputation eventually earning him Producer of the Year nominations at the SA Hip Hop Awards.
Looking back, Herc sees “Kwenzekile” as more than simply another successful placement. The record became proof that some of the most impactful music can emerge when artists stop overthinking and allow the moment to guide the session.
For a producer still establishing his name at the time, a 20-minute studio session had delivered the kind of breakthrough that can change an entire career. “Kwenzekile” did exactly that for Herc Cut The Lights.
