FIFA, CAF launch investigation into NFF leadership crisis

FIFA and CAF have directed the NFF to suspend its ongoing electoral process while they assess the legal, governance, administrative, and electoral implications of the recent developments.

The directive was in a letter dated September 7, addressed to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme by FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov. The decision means that further steps connected to the NFF elections have been put on hold until the assessment is completed.

As part of the process, FIFA and CAF are expected to conduct a joint assessment mission in Abuja. The delegation will engage relevant stakeholders and examine the circumstances surrounding the leadership changes, including the legal and administrative implications for the federation.

However, FIFA has stressed that no its beenotached anda conclusion ands yetnot yet decided onssible sanctions or other measures against the NFF.

Why did the NFF leadership resign?

Gusau announced his resignation alongside Sanusi and the Executive Committee members after mounting pressure over the performance of Nigeria’s national teams. He said his decision was intended to create room for a comprehensive reform process aimed at addressing institutional, governance and developmental challenges within Nigerian football.

FIFA had previously accepted the resignations of the former NFF officials, according to the NFF and National Sports Commission officials. Discussions over reforms have since continued between Nigerian football authorities, FIFA and CAF.

What happens next for NFF?

The immediate focus will be on the FIFA-CAF assessment and its findings. The governing bodies will determine whether the current electoral process can continue and what steps are necessary to restore stability within the NFF.

However, Nigerian football remains in a period of uncertainty, with the federation’s leadership structure and electoral process under international scrutiny.
