Back To The City Unveils Monumental 2026 Lineup As Festival Marks 20 Years Of Culture. Back To The City is turning 20, and the festival is celebrating the milestone with a 2026 line-up built to reflect the depth, history and evolution of hip-hop culture in Johannesburg.
The festival officially unveiled its 2026 bill today, accompanying the announcement with a powerful declaration: “THIS IS NOT JUST A LINE-UP. THIS IS 20 YEARS OF CULTURE.” The statement sets the tone for an edition themed Against All Odds, bringing together international heavyweights, South African pioneers, established stars and a new generation of artists.
International representation comes from Ab-Soul, Slum Village and the acclaimed Blu & Exile, adding a global dimension to a festival that has consistently connected Johannesburg’s hip-hop community with artists and sounds from around the world.
The local line-up runs deep, with Cassper Nyovest, Emtee, Blxckie, Stogie T, Reason and Tuks among the major names announced for the festival. They will be joined by Touchline, Kane Keid, Zulu Mecca, Babylowski, Loatinover Pounds, Buzzi Lee, Frank Casino, Dee Koala, Zakwe, Maraza and several other acts.
Back To The City is also using the 2026 edition to spotlight different sides of the culture through a series of specially curated segments. Power Hour will feature La Cabra, Just Sam, Tshego Santana and Mfana Touchline, while the Heritage segment will honour legendary group Trompies.
Sixby9ine Presents will bring together Flow Jones Jr, Roiii, The Northmob and Bantu Nots, while the festival’s extensive DeeJays line-up includes DJ Speedsta, Kyotic, Kenzhero, DJ Azhul and a host of other selectors.
The Rare Groove section will feature Nutty Nys, Kitchen Mess, Trev The Japanese and more, further reinforcing the festival’s commitment to representing the many sounds and generations that have shaped the culture.
Keeping the crowd moving and the programme on course will be hosts Nomfundo Yekani, Mmambo “The Voice of God”, DJ Fae Fae, XXC Legacy and Xavier Thxmas.
The 2026 celebration carries additional significance for Johannesburg. Back To The City is marking its 20th anniversary in the same year that the city celebrates 140 years, creating a rare intersection between the festival’s own history and that of the city it has called home.
For two decades, Back To The City has provided a platform for artists, DJs, dancers, producers, creatives and hip-hop communities to come together. This year’s line-up reflects that journey by placing pioneers and contemporary voices on the same stage.
The festival has already thrown down the challenge to its audience: “Are you in the city… or are you hearing about it after?”
