Loose forward Phepsi Buthelezi expects the Sharks to pose a greater threat under new attack coach Scott Mathie this season.
Mathie has returned to Durban to join JP Pietersen’s coaching staff after spending the past three years with Edinburgh.
The reunion is particularly significant for Buthelezi, who was coached by Mathie at Durban High School.
“I’ve walked a journey with him because he was my first-team coach. It’s actually been a bit of a full-circle moment for me, getting him back now,” Buthelezi told IOL.
Mathie has been tasked with sharpening the Sharks’ attack and making them less predictable, and Buthelezi believes his influence has already been evident during pre-season.
“He has brought back that excitement around our attack,” he said. “People can expect more fluidity and a smarter approach where we can keep teams guessing and not have them know exactly what we’re going to do.”

The Sharks, who thrashed the SWD Eagles 66-0 in George last week, face the Lions in their final pre-season hitout at Ellis Park on Friday (3pm).
They begin their Vodacom URC campaign with successive matches at Kings Park, hosting the Ospreys on 26 September before welcoming Leinster to Durban.
