Bulls coach Johan Ackermann says there’s a nervous wait to determine whether one of his key backs will be fit for the opening round of the new URC season.
New recruit Curwin Bosch was withdrawn from Friday’s pre-season north-south derby against the Stormers with a calf niggle.
The Bulls got the better of their rivals in a 38-26 win at Faure Street Stadium in Paarl, with Ackermann fielding a strong outfit that included Springboks Willie le Roux and Nizaam Carr, alongside the returning Hanro Liebenberg.

“Curwin was scheduled to play, but he had strapping on his calf,” Ackermann said. “We are a little bit worried. We hope he’ll be right for the first round [away to Zebre on 26 September], but it’s still too early [to tell].
“He hurt it at training and they still need to scan it properly. They’re just waiting for the first few days to pass to see whether he’ll be right for the first round.”
Despite the concern over Bosch, Ackermann was largely satisfied with his side’s performance and, more importantly, their overall fitness levels heading into the new campaign.

“I just said to Dobbo [Stormers coach John Dobson] that it was perfect in terms of what we wanted to see,” he said. “There were mistakes that we know we have to go and fix, but the biggest plus is that there were no injuries.
“Willie has a little bit of a hammy, but otherwise we came through reasonably well, and there were also some good moments that we’re happy about.”
