Rassie Erasmus will be delighted that a promising Springbok front-row forward has completed his injury recovery ahead of the 2026-27 club season.
The three-cap Marnus van der Merwe, who last featured for the world champions in last year’s 43-10 rout of the All Blacks in Wellington, has reportedly shaken off a longstanding calf problem and proved his fitness in an internal Munster training game.
He is set to pack down for his new club in a final warm-up before its URC season opener against Glasgow Warriors at Thomond Park next Saturday.

With Van der Merwe sidelined, the Boks turned to 39-year-old Deon Fourie as back-up to hooker Malcolm Marx during the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.
The former Scarlets and Cheetahs bruiser’s return gives Erasmus more options at hooker, alongside Johan Grobbelaar, Jan-Hendrik Wessels and André-Hugo Venter.
