Springbok flank Kwagga Smith has joined hooker Malcolm Marx on the Bulls’ recruitment radar.
The 33-year-old has played his club rugby in Japan since joining Yamaha Júbilo, now the Shizuoka Blue Revs, in 2018, but could potentially be in line for a return to South Africa.
Ackermann confirmed to Rugby365 that the Bulls are interested in both Smith and Marx, although he stressed that neither potential deal is close to being completed.
“There are still negotiations going on. Their names are on our table and we’ll look at them,” he said. “But it’s not finished yet, and it’s still a bit of a long way to go.”
Asked whether the Bulls were close to securing either Springbok, Ackermann replied: “Not yay or nay.”
Marx has already been linked with a return to South Africa from Japanese club the Kubota Spears.

Ackermann also addressed confusion surrounding Luan Giliomee after the highly-rated youngster was included in both the Bulls and Sharks squads announced for the 2026-27 season on Thursday.
“He’s still under contract with the Sharks, but we obviously have an agreement that he will come to us once his contract finishes,” he said.
“That’s unfortunately why his start is delayed. He’ll come over the moment he’s ready to come over.
“We’re hoping somewhere in October.”
