Griquas’ back-to-back Currie Cup triumph has earned the players a bonus.
Rapport reports that the Peacock Blues will receive an additional R500,000 for their heroics in Kimberley after successfully defending their Currie Cup title in last weekend’s final against the Pumas.
In the change room after their 23-16 Currie Cup triumph, André Markgraaff, chairman of the Griquas board, announced that half a million rand was on its way to the players. The money was made available by the Griqualand West Rugby Union (GWRU) and sponsors.
According to Arni van Rooyen, CEO of the GWRU, the team did not know about the bonus beforehand and they wanted to reward the players.
“We think the players deserve it,” he told Rapport. “We are very proud of them and they worked hard to win the Currie Cup.”

Griquas were also rewarded with R500,000 last year after shocking the Lions 27-25 in the final in Johannesburg.
Although winning the Currie Cup in successive years is already a notable achievement, Van Rooyen says there is a bigger vision.
“We will do our best to make it three in a row next year. It was our goal from the start.
“The coach [Pieter Bergh] and 90% of the players are staying with us. We are definitely going for three in a row.”
