Former centre Gcobani Bobo believes the Stormers need a “massive mindset change” if they are to mount a sustained challenge for the URC title this season.
The Stormers lifted the inaugural URC title in 2022, but Bobo feels they have drifted away from the balance that made them so effective during their championship-winning campaign.
“I think there needs to be a massive mindset change. If you think about the Stormers when they won the competition, it’s the balance they had in their game,” Bobo said during a URC media round table on Tuesday.
Bobo believes the Stormers’ title-winning formula was built on being able to apply pressure in different ways, rather than relying solely on their attacking flair.
“They could go to their forwards, where they got lots of love from their scrum. They got penalties and could go to their driving maul.”
The former centre feels that consistency has been missing from the Stormers’ game in recent seasons.
“I’ve found in the last two years that they’ve lost a bit of shape. They could not consistently stay patient with their kicking game, and then that filtered across the whole playing pattern,” he said.

While the Stormers still possess plenty of x-factor players like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Markus Muller and Cheslin Kolbe – Bobo wants the Cape side to develop a system that allows those players to thrive rather than relying on individual brilliance.
“They do have individual stars, but I would love to see the Stormers not needing to use their stars, but using the way they set up their stars to shine. The attack shape has to have consistency. Their playmakers have to play their roles and their strike runners have to run in the right places.”
