Jasper Wiese’s growing influence within the Springbok setup has been underlined by Duane Vermeulen as the powerful No 8 prepares to celebrate his 50th Test cap in Perth on Sunday.
Wiese’s been named on the bench for the Optus Stadium showdown – a welcome breather after an intense workload during Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series. Head coach Rassie Erasmus has also revealed that Wiese acts as extra security given that Marco van Staden starts at No 8 against the Wallabies – a position he’s unaccustomed to in the Bok setup where he’s largely been used as a flank or backup hooker.

Vermeulen has been especially complimentary of Wiese’s continuous development as a leader within the squad.
“I enjoyed the time playing against him and I’m also enjoying coaching him. He’s a fantastic player and a really big stalwart in the team and became one of the leaders in the core leadership group within the team,” Vermeulen said.
“He’s your go-to guy when you want go-forward ball and he’s really been playing well. It’s a fantastic achievement and looking forward to a helluva lot more of what we can get from him.”
