Sikhumbuzo Notshe believes his time in France can benefit the Lions as he begins a new chapter in Johannesburg.
The 33-year-old loose forward spent the last two seasons with Montauban, where he gained a new appreciation for the French approach before returning to South Africa.
“I really enjoyed my time there. I learned a lot from the way that the French play – it is very set-piece-oriented and up-front rugby,” Notshe told IOL.
Now with the Lions, Notshe believes their more enterprising style will suit his game.
“The Lions are a little bit more expansive. They throw the ball around. I’m just looking forward to it.”

Notshe will also face strong competition for places in a Lions loose-forward group packed with young talent, but sees that as an opportunity rather than a threat.
“The loose-forward depth at the Lions is strong. And getting older pushes you to keep up with the young guys like Siba Mahashe. That’s why you have to keep in good nick, so all that combines.
“I’m looking forward to the season ahead now.”

Notshe also wants to pass on the lessons he picked up during a career that included six Springbok caps and spells with the Stormers and Sharks.
“It’s a healthy competition. That’s how I see it. It is about improvement and learning from one another. I think that’s the most important thing – working together as a group instead of working as an individual.
“I tap into [captain] Francke [Horn]; Francke taps into me. It’s a work in progress.”
