KindlyNxsh Explains Why He Took His Shona Rap Seriously After Facing Criticism. KindlyNxsh has opened up about the thinking behind his decision to embrace Shona in his music, revealing how the response to his earlier work pushed him to take the sound and the stories he wanted to tell more seriously.
Speaking about his creative direction, KindlyNxsh said his approach was initially driven by a desire to make music that could be both meaningful and enjoyable. However, the response to his song “Todii” became an important turning point, showing him that listeners connected with the deeper side of his artistry.
“‘Todii’ taught me a lot. It made me realise that I had to take this sound seriously,” KindlyNxsh explained. The rapper said the experience made him understand that his music could go beyond entertainment and address difficult subjects affecting people and communities. He pointed to issues such as xenophobia and Black-on-Black violence as topics he felt he needed to confront through his music.
“I need to have the deep songs. I need to talk about deep topics, like xenophobia. I have to talk about Black-on-Black violence. I have to talk about everything,” he said.
For KindlyNxsh, using Shona is also an important part of that creative identity. Rather than treating the language as something that limits his music, he has incorporated it alongside his interest in dance and other elements of his sound.
“And use my language, and take off dance, everything at once,” he said, describing his intention to bring the different sides of his artistry together.
The comments offer insight into the thinking behind KindlyNxsh’s Shona-focused direction, particularly as he continues to navigate criticism while developing a sound rooted in his Zimbabwean heritage and his South African upbringing.
His approach reflects a broader intention to use his music to tell deeper stories while still retaining the energy and accessibility that initially attracted him to the sound.
“I took this very serious and I think I did it in my best way possible,” KindlyNxsh said. His remarks come ahead of the release of Shona Man, a new music project that pays tribute to legendary Zimbabwean musician Oliver Mtukudzi. The project further highlights KindlyNxsh’s connection to his Zimbabwean heritage while reflecting his desire to use his music to explore deeper subjects.
