The Cheetahs will play their two home matches in this season’s EPCR Challenge Cup at a new European venue.
The Free Staters, who previous played at NRCA Stadium in Amsterdam, will use St Helen’s in Swansea as their European base, hosting Welsh side the Dragons on Sunday, 13 December and French Top 14 club Perpignan on Sunday, 17 January during the pool stage.
The arrangement builds on the Cheetahs’ relationship with the Ospreys, who play at the redeveloped St Helen’s and will stage Challenge Cup matches of their own on the preceding day on both weekends.
The two clubs will also explore opportunities for their squads to train together while the Cheetahs are in Swansea.
NONU: SA teams must get serious
“It’s great to be welcomed so warmly by our friends in rugby, the Ospreys,” said Cheetahs director of rugby Frans Steyn.
“St Helen’s has a proud history, and we’re looking forward to playing there, experiencing the newly redeveloped stadium and making it our home in Europe.
“Most importantly, we’re looking forward to getting out there and playing some good Cheetah rugby.”
