The Pretoria rapper made the admission on Tuesday evening while responding to a social media thread ranking some of the best mixtapes of all time. In typical A-Reece fashion, he kept his comment short and understated, writing: “man, I just love making album-quality material and calling it a mixtape. something’s wrong with me fr.”

Released on 26 March 2021, TTTM has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed projects in recent South African hip-hop. The 13-track body of work explored themes of grief, legacy, and memory, featuring appearances from Stogie T, Wordz, Ayanda Jiya, Jay Jody, and Belo Salo.

The project also earned A-Reece the Mixtape of the Year award at the 2021 South African Hip Hop Awards. It has since accumulated more than 21 million Spotify streams, with almost every track on the project passing the one-million-stream mark.

For many fans, however, calling TTTM a mixtape has always felt like an understatement. That sentiment resurfaced in the replies to A-Reece’s post, with one listener declaring that they would “never” call TTTM a mixtape. Another described it as A-Reece’s strongest body of work since leaving his former label.

The reaction reflects the long-running debate around the rapper’s approach to releasing music. Despite the mixtape title, TTTM was presented with the depth, cohesion and attention to detail listeners typically associate with a studio album.

A-Reece has built much of his reputation around that approach. His projects often feel deeply personal and carefully constructed, while his understated presentation allows the music to speak for itself.

His latest admission only reinforces what his listeners have argued for years. A-Reece may call it a mixtape, but the quality of the music continues to make fans treat it like an album.
