The outspoken music executive and commentator reflected on the moment during a recent conversation, recalling how A-Reece’s 2021 project made him feel inspired to return to the studio.

“If there was a really big star, I’d want to be back in. Just think about that. Like, there’s no one that makes you want to be back,” Nota said. “The last time I felt like, ‘Damn, I need to be in the studio,’ was when I was listening to A-Reece’s, what’s it called? Today’s Tragedy, Tomorrow’s Memory.”

Nota then took listeners back to his holiday in Knysna, where he said he spent time listening to the project while travelling through the Garden Route.

“I was on my honeymoon, dog. I was in Knysna, dog, listening to that shit. Driving through Knysna, you know what I mean? Going to Plettenberg Bay, walking with fucking elephants. Just listening to him,” he recalled.

He specifically mentioned Dichotomy among the moments that stood out to him, describing the experience as one that genuinely excited him about music again.

“So that excited me, you know what I mean? And I haven’t been excited since. I thought something was coming since then,” he added.

Released in 2021, Today’s Tragedy, Tomorrow’s Memory became one of A-Reece’s most discussed projects, with the rapper exploring themes around loss, memory, identity and legacy. For Nota, however, the project represented more than another acclaimed hip-hop release. It provided the kind of creative spark that made him want to get back into the studio.

Nota’s comments also feed into his broader views on what constitutes a genuine hip-hop superstar in South Africa. Over the years, he has questioned whether some of the country’s most respected rappers have reached the level of cultural and commercial dominance he associates with true superstar status.
