Digital Maskandi Vol. 1 Brings Maskandi, Hip-Hop and Xigaza Together On New Compilation. Durban Media House and Africori Music Group have released Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, a new compilation bringing South Africa’s traditional Maskandi sound into conversation with hip-hop, Xigaza, R&B and pop.

Following a month of single releases and artist introductions, the project unites established performers and emerging talent in a collection that explores the possibilities of musical collaboration while preserving Maskandi’s cultural identity.

At the heart of the compilation is the idea that tradition and innovation can coexist. Across its tracks, the familiar Maskandi guitar, expressive vocals and storytelling meet contemporary production and influences from different musical backgrounds. Rather than simply blending genres for novelty, the artists explore how their distinct sounds can complement one another.

Leading the album is “Martell,” a collaboration between Njabulo Langa, Umqansa and Quality Biyela. The track brings together three artists within the compilation’s wider vision of creative partnerships, keeping Maskandi at the centre while allowing each contributor to add their own perspective.

The rollout began on 11 September with “Too Much,” featuring Mzukulu, the recently crowned SAMA Best Male Artist of the Year, alongside hip-hop artist Blxckie. Mzukulu’s soulful delivery meets Blxckie’s distinctive rap style over traditional Maskandi guitar arrangements, Spanish guitar flourishes and saxophone. The result establishes the project’s direction, bringing together two different musical worlds without stripping either of its character.

“Umgangela” takes the cross-genre approach further, pairing Sjava and Saliwa with rising Giyani artist Khanyie. The track explores friendship, loyalty, culture and love through a lively Maskandi exchange before Khanyie introduces the infectious rhythms of Xitsonga disco, commonly known as Xigaza. The collaboration connects Zulu musical traditions with the contemporary sounds of Limpopo, creating a meeting point between different cultural identities.

On “Pain,” Jaiva Zimnike and Jesse Clegg turn their attention to loss and remembrance. Zimnike delivers the emotional directness associated with Maskandi as he reflects on the absence left by the death of a loved one. Clegg’s vocals add another dimension to the song, giving its exploration of grief a reflective quality that reaches beyond individual experience.

The compilation also features “Flames,” an upbeat love song that carries special significance through the inclusion of the late Scebi “Inkosi Yamagcokama” Dlamini in one of his final recordings. Somcwayi joins him on the track, drawing from contemporary Maskandi guitar traditions while introducing a smoother, R&B-influenced sound. The song captures a relationship that has grown beyond its initial attraction into an intense and consuming romance.

The wider album brings together artists from different generations and regions, including Mzukulu, Blxckie, Sjava, Saliwa, Khanyie, Jaiva Zimnike, Jesse Clegg, Somcwayi, Scebi Dlamini, Njabulo Langa, Umqansa, Quality Biyela, Dr Buselaphi, Menzi and Lowfeye of The Qwellers. Their contributions reflect the range of influences shaping South African music, from traditional Maskandi and African soul to hip-hop and contemporary street culture.

The project also builds on the work of Ntuthuko Mtshali, whose involvement in the Maskandi community over several years helped inspire the compilation. His efforts over the past five years have contributed to three South African Music Awards, including two Record of the Year wins and one Music Video of the Year award. These achievements helped lay the groundwork for a broader initiative aimed at bringing artists from different backgrounds together while creating opportunities for experimentation within the genre.

With Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, Durban Media House and Africori Music Group present Maskandi as a living tradition capable of evolving alongside the artists and audiences who embrace it. The inclusion of hip-hop, Xigaza, alternative sounds and pop influences demonstrates how the genre can reach new listeners while maintaining its connection to South African cultural expression.

The compilation also challenges the idea that preserving a musical tradition requires keeping it separate from contemporary influences. By bringing together artists with different styles, experiences and audiences, the project creates room for new interpretations without abandoning the foundations that make Maskandi distinctive.

Digital Maskandi Vol. 1 is out now.
