A veteran tactician has joined the Zimbabwe national team coaching staff on a short-term contract.
Former Wallabies forwards coach Laurie Fisher is assisting the Sables as they prepare for Saturday’s Test against Namibia in Harare.
The 68-year-old left the Australian set-up in July when Les Kiss succeeded Joe Schmidt as head coach. His move to Zimbabwe comes as the African champions prepare for their first World Cup appearance since 1991.
Zimbabwe identified the breakdown as an area requiring improvement after losing all three of the country’s World Rugby Nations Cup matches in July. Fisher’s brief also includes working with local club and school coaches.

“I’m here short-term trying to help the Zimbabwe Sables around their breakdown and collision work,” Fisher said.
“They are a really exciting bunch to work with, they have a lot of power, a lot of energy and we are just trying to put some fundamentals in place.”
Zimbabwe will face Samoa in Wakefield on 7 November before meeting Uruguay in London a week later. They will conclude their November calendar against Chile in France on 21 November.
Fisher’s appointment is part of an effort to improve the team’s preparation for the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
Ex-Exeter Chiefs skills coach Ricky Pellow has also joined head coach Pieter Benade’s staff to work on attack and the backline.
