Hyron’s cause of death confirmed

The Lions have issued a statement on behalf of Hyron Andrews’ family following the death of the 31-year-old lock in France last Friday.

Andrews was found unresponsive in the shower at the team’s hotel on the Île de Ré, a day before the Lions’ Investec Champions Cup clash against La Rochelle.

Emergency services were called to the hotel shortly after 10:20am, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Lions confirmed that an autopsy conducted by French authorities had established that Andrews died from an aortic dissection, most likely occurring on an aortic aneurysm.

The French authorities described the cause of death as “a tear in the aorta (due to natural causes), which led to a significant accumulation of blood within the sac surrounding the heart.”

LIONS COACH: There’s no manual for this

The Lions said Andrews’ body remained in the care of the French authorities, with arrangements now being made to return him to South Africa.

“The Andrews family asks for respect, privacy and patience during this difficult time as the repatriation process begins,” the statement read.

“A timeline for the return of Hyron’s body to South Africa has not yet been determined. Further information will be communicated when it becomes available and under the guidance of the family.”

Andrews joined the Lions from English club the Sale Sharks ahead of the current season and featured in all three of their Vodacom URC matches.

He previously represented the Sharks from 2015 to 2024 and made two appearances for the Junior Boks in 2015.
