Stormers prepped for Scarlets kicking barrage

John Dobson says the Stormers’ aerial game must be on-point against a Scarlets side leading the URC kicking stats.

The Welsh side lost their first two matches of the URC season, to Cardiff and the Dragons, before bouncing back with a win over Benetton. Last weekend, they thrashed the Newcastle Red Bulls 47-14 in the EPCR Challenge Cup and will arrive in Cape Town on a relative high.

The Scarlets are the URC’s most prolific kickers, having kicked out of hand 84 times. They retained possession from 10 kicks and scored a try from one of them.

Dobson sees the approach as part of their identity.

“Their style of rugby goes back to their DNA, the old Llanelli days of Phil Bennett and Barry John, and when they won the Pro 12 playing a sort of “total rugby” is what they’ve always been proud of,” Dobson said.

“They’re leading the URC in terms of kicking metres [2,326] and the kick battles, so we have to be very accurate with our kick cycles.

“It’s a bit like us a few years ago when we kicked to create that chaos and space for us.

“They’ve made a positive start.”
